When I bought my new alternate Nathan MacKinnon jersey last season, I was banking on the Avs resigning him and making him a fixture in the organization. I was right. Today, the Avalanche resigned the great Natty Mac for a $44.1 million, seven year contract, which equates to $6.3 million a season. Not too shabby for a fella who isn’t even 21 yet.
Sakic stated that “He [MacKinnon] is going to be a key part of our team for many years to come and it was important to secure his rights and move forward.” MacKinnon was the No. 1 draft pick in 2013, and was the youngest player in the NHL to win the Calder Trophy for the best rookie. Last season MacKinnon was third in scoring for the Avs with scoring 21 goals, and 31 assists.
I’m thrilled that we will get to see Natty Mac flying down the ice and mature into an even better and more rounded player than he already is. Looks like my new sweater was a good investment.
